Discover New Sports VIII: Chess Boxing

The genius combination of thinking and fighting combine in this hybrid sport that is both mentally and physically demanding.

In 1992 French artist Enki Bilal invented an absurd mash-up of boxing and chess, where fighters battle both in the ring and on the board.

Within 20 years the sport he created was thriving with more than 250 fight knights devoted adherents of the strange but compelling sport.

Chess boxing is a fast growing sport, with large followings in Berlin and London, where most events take place.

Several other Chess Boxing events have taken place around the world, including in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Nantes (France), Reykjavík (Iceland), Amsterdam, Calcutta (India) and Krasnoyarsk (Russia). Participants must be skilled as both boxers and chess players, as a match may be won either way.

Rules

In Chess Boxing two opponents start with a game of chess before alternating with rounds of boxing for a maximum of 11 rounds.

Six rounds of chess and five rounds of boxing, with a round of chess takes four minutes and the boxing taking three.

Between the rounds there is a one minute pause, during which competitors change their gear.

The contest is decided by either a checkmate, exceeding the time limit of 12 minutes in the chess, retirement of an opponent, the referee’s decision in boxing or knockout also in the boxing of course.

If the chess game ends in a stalement, the opponent with the higher score in boxing wins. If there is an equal score, the opponent with the black pieces wins.

Skills

Chess Boxers must not only be experienced boxers, but must also be at least Class A strength as chess players.

For example, Nikolai Sazhin has an Elo rating of around 1900, roughly corresponding to high Class A or low expert level.

Arik Braun, the strongest chess player to have competed in Chess Boxing, a Grandmaster rated 2556.

Equipment

Boxing gloves, standard protective equipment (including wraps), and of course a chessboard which is provided.
