A stunning century from Rishabh Pant has put India in a strong position in the final Test in Ahmedabad.
The wicketkeeper hit 101 runs off 118 balls to take the game away from England in a blistering final session.
Washington Sundar was given out for LBW late in the day, but the decision was overturned by DRS.
India started the day on 24-1, looking to build a healthy lead after the early loss of Shubman Gill.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma’s dangerous partnership
Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma started to build a solid stand before the former was dismissed for LBW after another superb delivery from Jack Leach.
Pujara reviewed the decision, but DRS returned three reds meaning he had to carry on walking.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli followed soon after for another disappointing duck as Ben Stokes picked up his first wicket thanks to a solid catch from Ben Foakes.
England picked up a fourth wicket with the final delivery before lunch as Ajinkya Rahane fell victim to another James Anderson ripper to leave India 80-4 after the first session.
It looked as if Rohit would be making his 13th Test match 50, but fell at the final hurdle as he was given out lbw off the bowling of Stokes.
The Indian opener reviewed the decision, but umpires call meant the decision stood and had to walk off.
With India at 121-5, England would have hoped to bowl them out cheaply and potentially scrape a narrow first innings lead.
Pant’s introduction
However, with the introduction of Pant to the crease, this hope was soon to be quashed.
Ravichandran Ashwin was initially given out on the field for after Foakes caught behind off Stokes’ bowling, only for Ashwin to review the decision with replays showing the ball had come off his shoulder.
The decision was as a result overturned, and Ashwin could breathe easily again.
Ashwin added just six to his tally before he picked out Ollie Pope at short leg after another exquisite delivery from Leach.
A big shout for LBW against Pant came off Bess’ bowling, with no movement from the on-field umpires.
The decision was reviewed by England, but umpires call on DRS saved the wicketkeeper, little were England to know how big a blow that would prove to be.
India reached tea without losing any further wickets, going in at 153-6, still 52 runs behind England.
It was in the final session of the day however, where India fully kicked on and put the game beyond England.
With Pant and Washington Sundar at the crease, the pair attacked an England bowling attack then were clearly beginning to tire.
The temperature of around 41 degrees Celsius was clearly taking its toll on Stokes in particular who began to tire even more at the end of each over he bowled.
Pant took full advantage of this ad fired his way to a superb century, bringing it up in style with a superb maximum.
The resilience from the pair had taken India into a lead of 53, and to 258-6.
Pant added just one more run before he was finally dismissed, picking out Root in the field.
English frustration
Finally, to sum up the session for England, Sundar was given out on the field for lbw, only for the decision to be reviewed and overturned as he had got an edge on the ball before it hit him on the pads.
That was the final bit of action for day two, as India finished on 294-7, giving them a very healthy lead of 89.
India will be very happy with the position they are in and will look to get the lead up with the remaining three wickets they have in hand.
England now face an almighty task to stay in the match and will want to pick up the remaining three Indian wickets as quick as they can, before looking to post a respectable second innings total.
