Golden State Warriors are NBA champions for a fourth time in eight years after regaining the title following a four-year drought.
The Warriors won 103-90 at the Boston Celtics in Game 6 to triumph in the NBA Finals 4-2 in the best-of-seven series as star point guard Stephen Curry, who scored 34 points alongside seven assists and seven rebounds, won Finals MVP.
Game 6 of the NBA Finals was a must win game for the hosts Boston Celtics, but this was not the case and saw the returning NBA superpower claim their seventh championship.
Boston’s bright start
Things looked good for the Celtics as they took a commanding 10-point lead early in the first quarter as Jayson Tatum came out firing on all cylinders. However, in typical Golden State fashion, this lead was shortly cut to one at the end of the second seeing scoring excellence from their main man Curry and the emerging superstar Jordan Poole.
Back-to-back threes to start the second quarter for Dub Nation set the tone for the second frame of this game as the Warriors came out fired up.
Chef Curry cooking
With induvial defensive brilliance from Gary Payton III, and the two-way dominance from Draymond Green, this gave the Warriors freedom to open up and Curry to impose himself on the game. The end of the first half saw the Warriors go on a 29-0 run and putting them up 54 to 39.
The start of the second half, saw the Celtics come out fired up and the continuation of the revived Al Horford dominating at his veteran age. Ever since the disrespect in the Milwaukee Bucks’ series from NBA great Giannis Antetokounmpo, Horford has been on his revenge arch. Showing everyone his true skill and proving he isn’t washed, as many have said, the big man finished Game 6 with 19 points and 14 rebounds.
However, Horford’s vengeful playing style and the lacklustre performance from Tatum was not enough to overcome the Warriors. Excellent performances from Green, Poole and of course Curry, saw Golden State get the best of the Celtics in the later of the game, winning by 10.
A low-scoring game overall at 103-90 is a fitting winning margin for this game as both teams played amazing defence and weren’t giving up any easy shots.
Nonetheless, Golden State came out victorious and have ended the 2021-22 season as champions.
